Effect of Ethionine-induced Pancreatic Damage on Iron Absorption
نویسندگان
چکیده
Groups of rats were fed a diet of the purified type which was supplemented by dl-ethionine to produce pancreatic damage. It was shown that animals with pancreatic damage absorbed more iron from the gastrointestinal tract than control animals without pancreatic damage. When iron was added to the diet the animals with pancreatic damage absorbed even greater quantities of iron. These findings in rats were corroborated by similar findings in mice.

The effect of pancreatectomy and other agents on iron absorption and storage in the rat.
Evidence from both animal and human studies had been presented by various authors to suggest that reduction of pancreatic function increased iron absorption. The present experimental studies in rats showed that there was increased radioiron ((59)Fe) absorption after pancreatectomy, but this appeared to be due to the operative procedure as there was a similar increased absorption in animals who ...

SYMPOSIUM PROCEEDINGS I967 disease is furthermore often associated with chronic pancreatic damage. It is therefore interesting to find that patients with cirrhosis often have markedly increased iron absorption and that this can be reduced towards normal on giving the test dose with pancreatin (Callender, 1965). In an attempt to elucidate further the part played by the pancreas in iron absorptio...
متن کاملMethionine deficiency and iron retention in the rat.
I . Methionine-deficient diets were given to rats for 4 weeks. 2. This resulted in a decrease in total body iron, due to a decrease either in Fe absorption or Fe retention. 3. There was inhibition of growth, development of anaemia and a shift of body Fe to the liver. 4. There were no histological alterations which could be interpreted as specific to methionine deficiency. 5. These findings were...
متن کاملPancreatic Damage and Iron Absorption
I t is generally agreed that the iron equilibrium of the body is maintained by regulation of absorption of iron, since it has been dearly demonstrated that very little iron is excreted by the body (1, 2). Ingested iron may be absorbed and temporarily stored as ferritin (3) in the epithelial cells of the intestinal mucosa, principally in those of the upper third of the duodenum. The iron then en...
متن کاملThe Degenerative Changes in Pancreatic Acinar Cells Caused by Dl-ethionine
Degeneration of pancreatic acinar cells in rats injected with ethionine was studied by electron microscopy. The most conspicuous morphologic lesions occurred in the ergastoplasm. There was a widening of the endoplasmic reticulum, a decrease in number of membrane-associated ribosomes, and a development of fine and coarse vacuoles containing agranular disoriented membranes. Cytoplasmic ribosomes ...
